honeymoon: masai mara

few words could justify the mind blowing experience we had at the mara. it was truly unbelievable.

we stayed at a tented camp in the mara reserve.  our camp had only 10 tents along the talek river, where the hippos love to hang out and spend their days submerged.  in all honesty, we were glamping, not camping.  we never received anything close to the kind of service we received there, it was remarkable! when we arrived at the airstrip, we were greeted by some members of the staff with wet towels, and then our butler (yes, i said butler!) took our bags, brought us to the camp and prepared our room for us, while we were busy reading through the lunch menu.  (our butler would even put hot water bottles in our bed during dinner so that we'd return to a warm and cozy bed, ahh!!)

our tent was directly situated over the hippo hangout, and we got such a kick out of hearing them chat amongst themselves.  they basically sound like super manly men who lazily sit around drinking beers, and laughing at each others' jokes.  it was so cute!

we were the only guests at the camp that day, so we were told that "something special" was being prepared for us for dinner. and when we returned from our first safari trip, we found that they had set up a private, romantic dinner on our tent's deck. the deck was lit up with lanterns and candles, and they actually brought each and every course all the way over to us. it was amazing, and sweet, and sincere. every single meal we had was excellent.  each was a 4-course affair, stuffing us to maximum capacity.  but we felt a little bad about waste, so we happily gobbled each dish.

the weather in the mara is perfect: dry, sunny, and hot during the day; and cool in the mornings and evenings. there weren't nearly as many bugs or mosquitos as we were anticipating!  we left our tent wide open all day and didn't have any bugs crawl in, and i think we got a total of 3 mosquito bites between the two of us during our stay.  we were in heaven!  between the mind-blowing experience of seeing the wild animals so close, in their habitat, and the amazing service at the camp, we couldn't stop giggling and high-fiving each other for the amazing honeymoon we were having!

we could not believe how close we were to elephants, lions, cheetahs, zebras... they were all right there, within feet of us.  we saw baby lion cubs play with their parents, we saw a leopard hunt a gazelle, we watched elephants cuddle, we saw a hyaena run off with stolen meat... it.was.just.a.ma.zing.

our children will not be taken to the zoo.  our children will provide us with an excuse to return to kenya.
