bib's birthday

a couple of weekends ago, we had a surprise party for bib's birthday.  i contacted every friend i'd met and/or heard of, and planned the party with a famous mustache theme.  i asked each guest to arrive in costume, as any famous person with a mustache, except walter white, which i reserved for bib.

by the time of the party, bib and i had 4 episodes left to the entire series of breaking bad (i only recently got a taste, and quickly became addicted).  part of my excuse to have him over that night was that we were supposed to finish the series together.  so i incorporated some of breaking bad to the party decor, and even went so far as cooking some of that crystal that made heisenberg so famous.  i read that it's actually just rock candy that they make on the show, and the actors were addicted to snacking on it during takes.

making the candy is actually pretty simple, if you have everything you need.  but i, of course, didn't have 2 of the most important ingredients: corn syrup, and a thermometer.  i couldn't find corn syrup anywhere here, so i found a recipe online to make a substitute from scratch.  the problem was, i also couldn't find a thermometer, and candy making is so temperature-specific that you absolutely need to make sure you cook the mix at a certain temperature or it won't harden or set when it's cooled down.  cook it too long, and the candy will burn, or caramelize.  without the thermometer, i had no real way of gauging the making of the corn syrup nor the hard candy.  it took me 2 tries to get the corn syrup substitute (at least i just guestimated on the 2nd try). and after 2 tries of caramelizing the candy mixture, which turned it green, i got it right on the 3rd try.  it was so freakin cool to crack it up.  it really did look just like the crystal they cook on the show.  i used the blue crystal to decorate his cake, and i also served the green batches, passing them off as the 68% pure competition.

in addition, i prepared all sorts of goodies. the menu was a dream feast for a guy: burgers, chicken strips, fries, chips, his favorite chocolate chip cookies... i made mustache brownies and even blue rice crispie treats.  it was pretty awesome.

of course, no day-long marathon in the kitchen would be complete without mr. zooba causing some chaos.

very much to his surprise, he showed up to a room full of people dressed in costumes.  we all had a great time celebrating, eating, and hanging out.
